Description
Povidone-iodine (PVP-I), also known as wokadine, pyodine, and betadine, is a compound of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and elemental iodine. It was discovered in 1955 by H. A. Shelanski and M. V. Shelanski at the Industrial Toxicology Laboratories in Philadelphia. In vitro tests showed it was less harmful to mice than iodine tincture. In human clinical testing, it was superior to other iodine formulations. Betadine has become the iodine antiseptic of choice and is included in the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.
